Shelsley Walsh 18th & 19th July 2015

A warm and sunny morning greeted the twelve 500 drivers along with Tom Cowley in the sole V-twin. Everyone was optimistic for good times. This was Richard Grant's first visit the illustrious Worcestershire venue.

Proceedings were halted several times over the course of the morning for incidents and oil to be attended to which meant the Lawrence's only had one practice due to time constraints. However, Steve, Jan and Fin all turned in times in the 39 second bracket thus setting the scene for a good afternoon. Mike was frustrated by another magneto failure bring his day to an early close. Ted's day was also over as he discovered cracks to the chassis around the engine mounts over lunch.

By the end of the first run Fin had managed to find almost an extra second, taking him into the low 38 second bracket. This was to prove un-catchable and when it came to the final run of the day although Jan, Steve and John D all posted times in the 39's, there was still clear tarmac.

Tom in the V-twin was another to have a frustrating day with a succession of annoying issues culminating on the final run with the engine sprocket coming off.

Jan's Staride

This being the first of the weekends events, cars were checked over for what all hoped would be better times. Alistair had felt he was down on power due to fuel delivery problems, which proved to be the case when he found a partially blocked filter. Otherwise there was nothing serious for all those carrying on.

We were greeted with light rain when the track opened but fortunately my mid to late morning we were back to blue skies, much to the relief of what were now 10 contestants.

Dennis and Robin had selected early batch numbers and so had the worst of the damp conditions whilst for others it was drying before turning nice for their second ascent.  Tom had the gear linkage break before he even left his garage but a makeshift repair got him out to record a couple of very respectable times. Over lunch he was able to use the watermill workshop to fix it properly. Richard experienced a loss of spark part way up the course on his first run but a quick repair solved the issue.

Timed runs

After another stunning aerobatic display the afternoon runs got underway. Steve and Jan resumed their duel at the head of the pack but were closely followed by John D and a fast improving Richard. Ever consistent John F was not far behind.

The last run of the day continued in the same vein and it is fair to say there was contentment with a good days' competition. On what is decidedly a power venue, Tom used the extra grunt of the V-twin to good effect to record some very quick times and make up for the frustrations of Saturday.
