| In the race, victory for James became assured when John's engine tightened and he was clipped by David Whetton (750 Trophy), who spun into the barriers at the entrance to Gerards, resulting in red flags and a shortened race. Don Rawson and Roger Windley (both 750 Trophy) kept James honest to the flag and Bob Culver was chased home by Kerry Horan to finish 2nd and 3rd in class. Down the field, various battles raged, the similar overall lap times of the 750 Trophy cars ensuring that everyone had a good fight with constant passing and re passing. James' win ensured the Championship with a full ten points. John Turner came into the race needing a win and a poor finish from James but his chances disappeared with his blown engine. A good turn out of 11 500s joined the 750 Trophy regulars for an eventful end to the season at Mallory Park. It was a chilly day but the forecast rain held off until the journey home. In the end it became a Culver benefit with James taking the win and clinching the title with Bob following him home. Practice was red flagged and re-started due to a long trail of oil around most of Gerards and the hairpin resulting in several spins. James took pole but only by .62 of a second from Don Rawson (750 Trophy) and a further .18 to John Turner so a good battle seemed likely especially with the Championship still undecided..
