The programme listed 18 entries but only 16 lined up for practice, fifteen 500's and the v-twin of Simon Brown. By the time the session had finished we were down to eleven as Darrell had felt the engine tighten in the Flash Special he was guest driving, the JAP in the Revis was running very rough and the magneto failed on Gordon's Mackson. The other two non-starters were the Arnott driven by Iain Rowley, where a drive shaft had failed, whilst Rudolf Ernst had clouted the tyres at Shaw's hairpin. The customary rolling start saw pole man Peter de la Roche and Simon Brown tear into Gerard's within a length or two of each other, the extra grunt of the twin giving it the lead. The pair were to remain close for the whole 10 laps, Peter managing to pass on a couple of occasions just before the hairpin but then loosing out down the straight. Behind this battle, Stuart was having a lonely drive in front of two more duels. The first was between Rodney Delves and Richard de la Roche and the second between Xavier Kingsland and Shirley Monroe. The chequer flag only saw 8 finishers unfortunately as Alan Croft's JP suffered a sheared bolt in the gearbox mounting causing the chain to come off, the bracket carrying the carburettor on the Fillingham broke and Steve Jeffords Cooper suffered ignition issues.
