Willment 500 Sold

Willment 500cc one-off project for restoration.

Water cooled 500cc, four cylinder engine, lovely all-enveloping aluminium body. Original Borrani wire wheels, Most parts are with the car, but a few parts such as the carbs will need to be sourced.

A description of the Willment 500 from the 1974 article in, The Motor,

‘It had countless novelties, in particular a one-off in-line four cylinder engine, (Bugatti inspired) with twin overhead cams, and a bult up crank with one piece con-rods on roller bearings. It was square at 54/54 mm and had an 11.1 compression ratio. Maximum continuous revs were 10,400 but over 12,000 has been seen! Apart from the from the Dellorto carburettors and Scintilla magneto, everything was designed and made in Twickenham (at the Willment works).

The same applies to the clutch and five-speed gearbox with integral differential-and inboard disc brakes. The chassis is a multi-tube space frame with wishbone front suspension and De Dion at the rear.

The whole project which took from 1952 to 1954 to

complete was overseen by Louis Giron, one-time Bugatti man.

Much of the mechanical bits were the responsibility of Messrs.

Wadworth and Hewland, the latter then a Willment mechanic, (latterly) Hewland and Hewland gearboxes. ‘
