Shelsley Walsh 27th and 28th July 2013

Shelsley is a beautiful setting and as usual was welcoming. Since our last visit almost a year ago, the M.A.C. has resurfaced the track throughout the Esses sector so although the grip levels would potentially be up, the overnight rain might have made it greasy until the sun had warmed things up.

The practice runs were largely uneventful from a mechanical point of view although Ted felt the clutch on the RGR was not quite right, so set about changing it.

The timed runs
The sun was beating down well, the track was dry and the times were close. Steve L, the quite man, led the field with a scorching time. Mark and Alistair were the only others below 40 seconds and both were thinking hard about where to squeeze a little extra from their mounts. If the clouds on the horizon did not spoil events, the second run was going to be great.

The rain did hold off, the first drops only falling as we left for the return down the hill. The extra effort went well with seven drivers lowering their times. Dennis’ grin for his fastest time at Shelsley was marvellous but tinged with concern that the following day was going to be a problem, as he had lost third gear. However, people rallied round to help to check the car and remove the offending article whilst he made a rapid trip home for a comfy sleep in a bed, as opposed to his van, and collect a spare gearbox.

Sunday
The day dawned with rather more cloud than Saturday and the forecast warned of rain later in the day. Would we be lucky? There were two schools of thought about practice, start early and risk some residual damp at the esses under the trees, or book batches later and hope for no shower. As it turned out, the morning was dry. Dennis and his son were hard at work changing the gearbox after the quick overnight return home for his spare unit but everything came together well. Alistair had passed the driving seat of the Hornet over to son Oliver and was now mounted on the fearsome beast that is the Farley Special, a two stage supercharged V-twin belonging to Ewan Cameron. Ewan was to drive another supercharged machine, Djinn, an 1100cc V-twin in a 500 chassis, if the fuel pump issues could be sorted. Mike L was now driving his Mark 10 instead of the Cooper Special.

The timed runs
Just before proceedings were to start there was a short light shower, fortunately not enough to really wet the track, which was still warm from the morning’s sun. Times were therefore pretty close to the day before but only Dennis managed an improvement, a great reward for hard work, and his grin said it all

Just before the second run was due, the rain put in a serious appearance, meaning proceedings stopped for around twenty minutes. As the hill was now well and truly wet no one was under any illusions about a quicker time, indeed Steve, Jan and Mike L decided discretion was the order of the day. Olly didn’t run as the oil pump had fallen off the engine and there was no way it could be fixed.

All in all it was a good weekend with everyone looking forward to the next visit in three weeks time.
