Charles Heyward began competing in 500s in 1951 in a Cooper Mk IV but concluded that the car was too old and, in partnership with his son, Brian, began construction of his own car, the C.H.S. in 1952 using parts of the Mk IV and lighter cast magnesium components from the Cooper MkVI.
