Mallory Park 14th March 2004
Two 500s joined in with a mixed grid of 20 Formula Juniors, at a wet and windy Mallory Park, for the first round of the 2004 Championship. Practice was wet, reducing the power advantage of the bigger engined cars and allowing Neil Hodges to qualify in 14th overall with Geoff Gartside in 19th, both in Cooper Mk VIIIs. By race time, the circuit was nearly dry and Neil nearly didn't make the grid due to the refusal of his JAP to fire up in the assembly area and he eventually started the race from the pit lane. Geoff made better progress having cured his earlier handling problem but sadly retired on lap 6 with no ignition, leaving Neil to take the class win. The overall race was won by Paul Smeeth in his Lotus 22 but it was marred by a coming together at Gerard's which left Steve Smith's Cooper T59 badly damaged. Classified Finishers
